Experience Description

In this guided tour I host via SeekSherpa we will explore two colonial cemeteries of Kolkata. In the interest of curiosity I will not disclose the names of these cemeteries! We'll begin with a cemetery built upon a modest existing church by funds raised from a public lottery; this is one of the earliest buildings commissioned by the English East India Company as Calcutta became the headquarters of fledgling colonial administration. The church compound houses the grave of the founder of Kolkata and other eminent servants of East India Company in its early days! We will learn how this founder ended up in a malaria-infested swamp that Calcutta used to be. We will talk about an English doctor who cured a Mughal Prince from a terminal disease that had turned the fortunes of the Company. We will meet the 'White Mughal' learn about his tragic love-affair with a Hyderabadi Princess and finally, meet the 'greatest liar in the British empire'! We will then move to the Cemetery 2, the largest Christian cemetery outside Anglo-American world in the 19th century! We will identify different types of grave architecture. Learn about the beginnings of Indology and its pioneering figure, and know who the 'most beautiful girl in Calcutta' was in the late 18th century.
The aim of this heritage walk is to introduce the explorers to the lives and times of early days of Colonial rule in Bengal.

I found this event serendipitously while fumbling through the bookmyshow and just before the great autumn festival begins in Calcutta with its all funfair,on one fine sunny morning,we started our walk for seeing the unseen, tasting the old wine in new bottle,i mean without the pun. First it was St Johns church and our guide Tathagata started with a brief introduction of himself and also the start of British era in India and progressively unraveled the earliest church of its kind. The great facade, the retro-Gothic architecture, the barrels and the scriptures, two golden statues of Jesus, the colorful glass-work - all ingredients were there for being a this a hell of ride. From there, by a dedicated cab we started for our final and spookier destination -Park Street cemetery. All the paperwork s were done by them i.e the organizer and truly they should be thanked for that. We reached finally the great, old place and whoa! it was like really history unearthing in front of us! The basic architecture of various coffins, the tallest personal grave structure, the story of the most beautiful Lady of the then Calcutta and how she played a prank with all his admirers and the notorious British officer-Tathagata truly gave an intoxicating and picturesque description. Then came the Derozio's grave and Hindu Stuart. We had got ample time to get around the place, feel the rustiness on our own and take photos in-between. In short it is truly tasting a classy, old wine with such a quality brewing. Thanks Seeksherpa and sherpa Tathgata for organizing such a novel event.

Reviewed by Debasish Ghosh - Telephonically - For Sherpa Tathagata - I thank Tathagata for the way he conducted the tour. Hope SeekSherpa does more such tours covering lesser known Cemeteries like the Greek Cemetery etc. and also some Indian memorials like the Marble Palace, the Palaces of the Tagores etc. and also nearby places like Bandel Chandannagore in the future.

Reviewed by Manju Mohandas - Telephonically - For Sherpa Tathagata - Tathagata's tour of cemeteries of Kolkata served was one where graves served as the window to the British era in Calcutta, through which we were able to take a close look at important people, events and social perceptions of that period. Replete with interesting and hitherto unheard of anecdotes, Tathagata' s tour painted a captivating picture of 18th and 19th century Calcutta. I am so glad to have been a part. I hope he conducts more such tours in the future.

Reviewed by Mona Dutta - Telephonically - For Sherpa Tathagata - Enjoyed the micro tour of the cemeteries with our guide Tathagat. He was a storehouse of knowledge about all the places we visited. Liked how he planned it and he even brought with him maps and pictures of Old Kolkata. I have done other guided walks but none of the guides have shown this kind of professionalism. About Seek Sherpa, I hope they will provide many more different types of walks. Is there a mailing list where I can get to know about kolkata walks in advance? I would love to have seeksherpa organize day long tours to the other interesting parts of Old Kolkata like Dutch, French, Portugese Kolkata (Bandel, Chandannagar, Chuchura) etc. As a photographer I would also like if the guide has some knowledge about good vantage points for some good shots of the locations being visited. Perhaps, if they even got the pictures of the places visiting in their smartphones, it might help to see what best angle to view the place from.
